Shut the water off

Main shutoff is usually at the front-yard meter box or where the water line enters the house. Turn the valve perpendicular to the pipe to stop flow.

Kill power to the water heater

Electric: flip the breaker labeled WATER HEATER. Gas: turn the dial on top of the tank to OFF. This prevents a dry-fire if the tank is leaking.

Contain the leak

Towels, buckets, and a wet-vac if you have one. Move electronics and rugs. Open a downstream faucet to drain pressure once the main is closed.
